Adoption Day

It's National Adoption Day!  Squeeze those adopted babes tight.  If you're waiting I hope your wait is short and your heart's at peace.  Continue to be grateful for birth families.

Superman

And just like that...wham!

As I've said before we have always been open with our kids about being adopted.  We answer any and all questions honestly and age appropriately.  Generally Rogan is the only one who has shown any interest in knowing about his adoption.

Today, I took the kids to run a few errands while Brian was at the office.  As we were driving home, out of the clear blue, Brice blurts out "Mom do you love dad?"  I was confused by the question but answered "of course!"  He then said that must be why the other mommy gave me to you.  Because I love his dad so much and we'd love Brice too.

Brice is not a talker.  He's a silent assassin.  I knew he had been listening intently all those times that Rogan asked me questions and voiced his curiosities.  He never showed any interest, he never had any questions but he's been processing it all.  He has been playing it all out in his mind and developing his own conclusions.

We knew this day would come.  We knew he would have questions and have to work through his adoption.  We continued our conversation in the car today and even listed all the people we know that are adopted.  After naming everyone we knew I said "Oh yeah, don't forget Superman.  He was adopted."  Brice's mouth fell open.  Superman?  He had forgotten because I'd mentioned this before but nonetheless he was impressed.

The questions will always be there.  You never know when they will come out.  Our kids generally just blurt them out and you get no warning.  Oh and they never corner their father.  Thank God for Superman.

National Adoption Awareness Month

November is National Adoption Awareness Month.  Are looking for ways to celebrate?  Here are a few ideas (source: http://www.nationaladoptionawarenessmonth.com/celebrate.html)...

There are a lot of ways to celebrate National Adoption Awareness Month:
  • Support Adoption Foundations
Lifetime Adoption Foundation is a non-profit charity that assists the women choosing adoption, both with their physical needs and their futures, through educational scholarships. It also offers grants for families open to adopting hard-to-place children. Donations received go directly to funding both of these programs.
  • Write a letter to your local newspaper about the blessing of adoption
For ideas and stories, click here to visit websites about adoption.
  • Read an adoption story as a familyRead stories about Lifetime Adoption's most recently adopted babies and children, and updates on previous adoptions.
  • Ask your local library to display adoption-related books.Adoption expert Mardie Caldwell has written several books on adoption including AdoptingOnline.com,Adoption: Your Step-by-Step Guide, Called to AdoptionSo I Was Thinking About Adoption... and The Healthcare Professional's Adoption Guide.
  • Learn more about positive adoption language
Using positive adoption language will help end the myth that adoption is second best. By using positive adoption language, you’ll reflect the true nature of adoption, free of stereotypes. Click here to read some examples of positive and negative adoption language.
  • Purchase an adoption prayer bracelet for yourself or someone you know who has been touched by adoption. Wearing an Adoption Prayer Bracelet is a lovely way to display your adoption hope and a reminder to pray for your adoption and those involved in the adoption. All profits from Adoption Prayer Bracelets to go a non-profit which helps birthmothers, children, and adoptive parents.
